CTSM: Basic Do's and Don'ts

Basic Do's and Don'ts

Data Protection
  • Never rely on floppy disks as a safe data medium or for permanent storage of important data
  • Always keep at least two copies of important data.
  • Regularly back up your important data.
  • Regularly check your backups are working.
  • Have a plan for disaster recovery.
  • Sign up for Support with CTSM
Security
  • Always opt for the best anti-virus protection you can afford.
  • Always change the administrator password to something that no person or program could easily guess or generate.
  • Have log on passwords for all users (i.e. to secure your data).
  • Never open an email with a suspicious attachment (e.g. .exe .vbs .dll .bat) unless it is one you are expecting and from a trusted source.
  • Write down your passwords and keep in a safe place.
  • Don't allow unauthorised software on your PCs.
  • If your system has external email and/or Internet access then protect your system with a firewall.
  • Sign up for Support with CTSM
Hardware Protection
  • Protect your system with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit.
  • Protect PCs with power surge protectors.
System Support
  • If you have in-house IT support, seriously consider an external support contract as backup.
  • If you don't have in-house IT support, an external support contract is essential.
  • If you have problems with your PC, always reboot before phoning for support.
  • If you have system-wide problems then get someone who knows what they are doing to restart the server. Nine times out of ten it will fix the problem.
  • If on starting your PC, you get a message like "Invalid system disk" then remove the floppy disk!
  • Always shut down properly. Never use the off button or switch off at the mains!
  • Before phoning for support, have ready a clear description of the problem and note down any error messages or codes.
  • Don't dabble! If in doubt, consult someone who knows what they are doing.
